Avoid this Ingredient in your Face Cleanser

Soap is associated with cleanliness. The abundant foaming gives us the signal that soap is doing it’s job and the more we scrub, the cleaner we get. How satisfying! But soap has a dark side. Don’t get me wrong, soap serves a purpose in keeping things clean and has it’s place in the world, but it has no place on your face.

First let’s understand what soap is. Soap is made of three primary components: oil, lye (an alkali), and water. When lye is dissolved in water then heated with the oil, it forms what we traditionally know as soap. Soap has a high PH (9 - 10) because it contains a chain of fatty acids. Anything with a lower PH will experience an imbalance and disruption of PH levels when washed with soap.

Here enters your face. Your skin has a more acidic PH level of 4-5. When washed with soap, your skin may experience dryness, irritation, redness, and sensitivity. Furthermore, it forces your skin to do extra work to come back to it’s PH balance. Some even say washing your face with soap is “the worst thing you can do to your skin.”

So what should you wash your face with instead? Look for cleansers without soap or other harsh chemicals. How? Read the ingredients list on the label before you make a purchase! Look for language like “soap-free” and “for sensitive skin” on the packaging. If a cleanser contains traditional soap, you’ll likely see sodium lauryl sulfate listed as an ingredient.

Many soap-free cleansers use a soap alternative derived from coconut that has a slight foam when activated with water and cleans without stripping the skin. Examples of this are sodium cocoyl iseniothate and sodium methyl cocoyl taurate.
